Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy weight for me?
The NHS recommends using your body mass index (BMI) to check if you are a healthy weight.
You will need your height, weight and age to calculate your BMI, and can use this handy calculator on the NHS website. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.

Am I eligible for weight loss treatment?
You could be eligible for our weight loss treatments if you are aged between 18 and 75 and:

  • have a BMI of over 30; or
  • have a BMI of over 27 and have been diagnosed with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or heart problems
Our pharmacists will recommend the most suitable treatment for you based on your BMI, other medicines you are already taking and any other health problems you may have.
How do weight loss injections work?
All of our prescription weight loss injections work in a similar way. They:
  • Suppress your appetite so that you aren’t as hungry
  • Regulate your blood sugar, which helps reduce cravings
  • Slow down your digestion so that you feel fuller for longer
How do weight loss tablets work?
Weight loss tablets work in different ways depending on the active ingredient they contain.

  • Orlistat is the active ingredient in medications such as Orlistat, Xenical and alli. It works by reducing the amount of fat which your body can absorb from the food you eat.
  • Mysimba acts on the part of the brain which controls your appetite. It is believed to curb hunger and cravings so that you eat less calories than you burn each day.
Are weight loss tablets and injections safe?
Yes. Our pharmacists will review all of the information you give to us so that they can make sure the medication they prescribe is safe for you take. Please read the instructions you have been given carefully and make sure you follow them closely when you take the medication.
Are there any side effects?
Some people do not have any side effects from weight loss treatments, whereas others may experience them while their body gets used to the medication.

Some of the most common side effects from weigh loss injections include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain and fatigue.

These will usually go away on their own. If you feel sick, drinking lots of water and eating smaller meals and easy to digest foods will help. If you get a headache, drink water, rest and taking over-the-counter pain killers.

If you are taking weight loss pills, you may need to go to the toilet more often or have oily or fatty stools. Eating less fat can help with this.

You can find out more about possible side effects by reading the information leaflet carefully when you receive your medication. Please contact us for advice if you are worried about any side effects.

If you have a serious side effect, such as an allergic reaction, call 999 or ask someone to take you to A&E.
How long will it take before I start to see results?
Everyone responds to medications differently, but most people can expect to start to see results within a few weeks when using the treatment alongside a healthy diet and exercise.
What else can I do to help me lose weight?
As well as taking your prescription, you should make sure you are eating a healthy, balanced diet and taking some exercise. We will send you information about resources which can help with this, including website links and apps, with your first prescription.

To lose weight safely, the NHS recommends you should reduce the amount of calories you eat by 600 every day. This means men should limit their intake to no more than 1,900 calories and women to no more than 1,400. This will create a calorie deficit, which means you are eating less calories you burn.

You should also eat more fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and healthy fats (such as salmon or other oily fish). Try and include healthy proteins, such as chicken, lean beef, eggs or beans, with every meal as they will help you to stay fuller for longer. Limit sugary food and drinks, high fat or deep fried foods, as well as white bread and alcohol.

Exercise is also really important. Try and do around 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every week, such as power walking, swimming or cycling, and add in some higher intensity activities like running if you can. As well as helping you lose weight, exercise can help protect your bones and joints as you grow older and prevent conditions such as heart issues, stroke and diabetes.
