As well as taking your prescription, you should make sure you are eating a healthy, balanced diet and taking some exercise. We will send you information about resources which can help with this, including website links and apps, with your first prescription.
To lose weight safely, the NHS recommends you should reduce the amount of calories you eat by 600 every day. This means men should limit their intake to no more than 1,900 calories and women to no more than 1,400. This will create a calorie deficit, which means you are eating less calories you burn.
You should also eat more fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and healthy fats (such as salmon or other oily fish). Try and include healthy proteins, such as chicken, lean beef, eggs or beans, with every meal as they will help you to stay fuller for longer. Limit sugary food and drinks, high fat or deep fried foods, as well as white bread and alcohol.
Exercise is also really important. Try and do around 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every week, such as power walking, swimming or cycling, and add in some higher intensity activities like running if you can. As well as helping you lose weight, exercise can help protect your bones and joints as you grow older and prevent conditions such as heart issues, stroke and diabetes.
